It all started when local boutique retailers reached out to me for styling. I quickly noticed the disconnect between their online store and brick-and-mortar experience, from a visual merchandising lens.
So I played sleuth and discovered:
There was a rush to pivot to an online (thanks COVID). Then retailers returned to business as usual – their physical shop – only to find it tough to manage both channels well (fair enough because both are SOOOO time consuming!).
Visual merchandising for retailers has become a year-round event, well beyond the four seasons and big holidays. Retailers don’t plan ahead enough.
Focusing on visual merchandising might not be a retailer’s superpower or activator.
By not having a consistent, mind-blowing user experience across channels puts a massive ding into the shopping experience and therefore affects sales! The whole sales ecosystem is flawed.
With a VM guru on board, retailers have can ask good questions – and make even better decisions. For example:
Is our visual merchandising enticing new customers?
Is there brand buzz?
Are we getting more business through word of mouth?
What’s stopping our customers from buying, or buying more?
Is our store trusted, or is it outdated and poorly laid out?
Is there inconsistent messaging between channels?

Visual merchandising is not simply the cherry on top of a multi-channel retail experience. As humans are visual creatures, VM can make or break your sales ecosystem.
