“Facet” Wooden necklace Statement
To experiment with timber off-cuts using indigenous timber to make one-of-a-kind wooden necklace, a technique inspired from precious gemstones.
Creative
This chunky faceted wooden necklace was three years in the making. And a true labour of love.
I've been entranced by gemstones since I was ten, particularly their unique patterns and sparkly light. Being the curious cat that I am, I wondered if I could find a way to use our local Silky Oak timbers to make a statement necklace.
After a lot of naval gazing, I ended up finding the perfect way. I hand-carved individual beads to draw attention to the timber's natural grain lines, features and colour variations.
The beads are strung on sustainably sourced French grosgrain ribbon and secured with a bow, which can be tied short, long or layered with a friend. Even better, the facet can be worn comfortably all day long because they're much lighter than gems of a comparative size.
Statement
This piece is one of my all-time faves. It's sustainable and sensational, all in one. Other people love it too. It's been a finalist in an art expo and was commended in Wood Review's 2023 Maker of the Year Awards in the arts and objects category.
