NAUTICAL-THEMED beaded JEWELLERY
To create fun beaded jewellery and accessories for a community art expo in the Northern Rivers.
Creative
Inspired by an old nautical superstition, I brought to life a colourful and endearing cast of oceanic characters through the vessel of jewellery. Two brooches, one earring and 1 Cloisonné charm earring, to be precise.
The theme was based on Davy Jones’ Locker, an old folk metaphor for the bottom of the sea – where sailors and shipwrecks went as a final resting place!
Lovingly created with beaded items (vintage and new), felt, pipe cleaners, thread and bits of jewellery (yep, I’m a bit of a bower bird), this motley collection of nameless souls trapped in the shadow depths of Davy Jones’ Locker was carefully hand-embroidered using age-old techniques.
To add a contemporary twist, I’ve gone for bold primary colours.
Statement
I was chuffed when this beaded jewellery and accessories collection won second prize in the sculpture/3D category at the Ocean Shores Arts Expo 2024. One of the judges described my work as “Great fun, wearable, bright and breezy.”
